The current market preference is for Java/J2EE based Web/Thin Client
applications. Already many medium and large enterprises have adopted
J2EE as the most preferred architecture for building scalable enterprise
Information Systems.
Since around the year 2000, Oracle has recognized the market push
towards Web based user interface for building client side. Only
since the year 2002 Oracle has openly published its preference for
Web based client side (i.e. Thin Client) and announced withdrawal
of support for client side Forms product (i.e. Thick Client, Client/Server
mode architecture).
However, a majority of the customers are continuing with Oracle
Forms based Thick Client applications. All of these applications
are either "Be-spoke applications or products from ISVs,
with necessary site-specific customization.
To provide a "transition path" to its customers who have
invested in Oracle Forms based client applications, Oracle has come
out with a migration path through Server side Forms service utilizing
its application server product Oracle Application Server (Oracle
9iAS).
The Oracle migration path using server side Forms service discontinues
support for over 200 essential features that are currently available
in the Oracle Forms client. These features range from the CRITICAL
ones like client Operating System Specific Item Types (like windows
controls) to dropping certain styles of triggers, changing data
types, all the way through to cosmetic features like the font set
not being supported in its entirety.
Customers with current assets in Oracle Forms based Thick client
applications have multiple options to migrate:
Intertec has developed a specialized tool-set and methodology to
handle all of the above solution options. Intertec is the only company
in the market, which can offer solutions for such a divergence of
source environments and target solution options.
